ACTIVE RELEASE TECHNIQUES (ART®)
COMMON QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
THE GOLD STANDARD IN SOFT TISSUE TREATMENT FOR
- Repetitive Strain (prolonged sitting)
- Sports Injuries
- Cumulative Trauma Disorders (keyboarding/computer use)
1. WHAT IS CAUSING THE PAIN?
Pain from your shoulder, knee, neck or low back can be caused by repetitive strain, sports injuries or cumulative trauma disorder. These soft tissue (muscles, ligaments or tendons) conditions often do not show up on radiographic studies (x-rays). When soft tissue has been injured, or even chronically tight, it forms scar tissue. While necessary for healing, scar tissue may stick to adjacent structures restringing range of motion and may compression over nerves or blood vessels. This condition alters the texture of soft tissue, which Dr. Joel N. Kerr (Dr. J) an experienced ART provider can diagnose and treat.
2. WHAT CAN BE EXPECTED FROM TREATMENT?
Active Release Techniques, as the name implies, uses motion to fix the problem. Once the injury has been assessed, Dr. J will use hands on treatment and patient motion to “free up” the problem areas.
Treatment duration and frequency may vary depending on the severity and complexity of the injury. However, most patients experience rapid recovery.
3. WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM ART®?
What I hear most from patients is:
“I have had this pain for a long time, and up until now, no one has been able to find the cause. You found the source of the problem right away.”
This is because no one is trained to palpate specific conditions like an ART® provider such as Dr. J. Consider Dr. Kerr, an ART® provider, as a soft tissue and nerve specialist.
As an ART® provider Dr. J is qualified to diagnose and treat over 400 structures, and see a broad range of injuries and conditions. ART is successful for:
- Weekend warriors
- Office-Computer workers
- Smartphone Users (Blackberry and or Iphone)
- People injuried in auto accidents
- People who just work hard and hurt!
Symptoms vary from aches and pains to burning muscles, to numbness and tingling.
4.HOW IS ACTIVE RELEASE TECHNIQUES w is Active Release Techniques (ART®) DIFFERENT FROM OTHER TYPES OF MANUAL THERAPY?
Active Release Techniques (ART®) soft tissue management system is so different from other manual therapies because it has been granted a medical patent. In order to become an ART provider, each professional must complete extensive hands on instruction and written/practical testing unparalleled by other soft tissue programs.
An ART provider is trained to palpate and treat more than 300 muscular and fascial injuries and over 100 nerve entrapments (pinched nerve) which often cause numbness and tingling.

Extended health care plans are applicable to ART® treatment sessions.
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient Asian system of healing technique of inserting and manipulating needles into various areas on the body. According to acupunctural teachings this will restore health and well-being, and is particularly good at treating pain. The definition and characterization of these points is standardized by the World Health Organization. Acupuncture is thought to have originated in China and is most commonly associated with Traditional Chinese medicine.
What is Medical acupuncture?
The Medical Acupuncture approach to treatment is a precise peripheral nerve stimulation, in which fine solid needles are inserted into areas of the individuals’ body that generate pain and or musculoskeletal dysfunction. The needle can be stimulated manually or with electrical stimulation for the therapeutic purpose of changing abnormal activity that occurs in various systems of the body for example the nervous system, endocrine system, immune system etc. that were initially disrupted by the pain and/or dysfunction.
